ERP systems connect to real-time data and transaction data in a variety of ways. The first one is via direct integration. Here, ERP systems have connectivity otherwise understood as communications to equipment requiring specific support for plant floor equipment. The second is via database integration. In this instance, the system connects plant floor data through tables in a database.

The benefit of staging tables is that ERP professionals do not have to master equipment integration. Some companies may prefer custom integrated solutions that require specialized workstations. These solutions are more expensive. ERP providers must be experts in their own products and other vendor products including those of their competitors. Under proper supervision, enterprise resource planning can yield great dividends for the management and staff.
